Abstract:
This thesis willexplore perception of an individual and the act of blurring as a device to createan elevated experience of architecture. Materiality, light, color, texture, andsound are all phenomenal elements that create one’s perception. There are moments where one’s perceptionbecomes blurred. Blurring is the act ofmaking something less distinct, merging of two entities to eliminate theunderstanding of a clear boundary. This architectural thesis will explore the blurringof materials and phenomenal elements to stimulate the consciousness of anindividual.
Today, individualsare intertwined with architecture in daily activities, yet they disregard thecultural and phenomenal qualities that it possesses. Through the act of blurring materials and thephenomenal elements, perception of a space can be skewed. The passive observer is transformed into anactive participant by causing feelings of contemplation, self-reflection and anintense sensory experience in an individual.
The analysis andresearch conducted on the topic of blurring will be the foundation that willlead my design methodology as I develop a Center for the Visual Arts. I plan to research in-depth the sense ofsight. I would like to discover moreinformation on how vision is created and how light effects it. My initial design studies will commence witha study of light and material. It willfocus on how I can utilize these elements to blur perception of anindividual. The focus of this thesiswill be how architecture can blur perception to stimulate the consciousness ofan individual.
Research Different Forms of Blurring:
Perception - Created by Blurring - Maurice Merleau- Ponty’s Chiasm - Intertwining of Mind, Body and World - Elements that come together to create how an individual perceives.
Blur Building - Visually deprived spectacle. Pinnacle of Blurring Wall - physical - Fog - Metaphysical (Boundary) Blurs senses - vision, tactility of fog, smell of air, sound
Pallasma - Experience through peripheral vision - Integrates Individuals with space - focus pushes out of space and become spectators
Chemicals - Elements are mixed reaction created - New substance
Robert Irwin - Art technique Blur Perception - Scrim Light Wire
Sound - Music instruments blur together made harmony. (Orchestra)
Colors - Paints - Mixing creates different colors
PSD Blur - Screen blurs painted section makes it lighter - Changes perception - give depth shadow - not crisp - reduce detail
Continuity - (Materials) Blurring together materials FOA (Question where individual actually is? Wall or Roof)
Blurring - (Microspecifity _ Common in all forms of Blurring) taking two or more elements and bringing together causes different reaction, experience, perception.
